…accountable…

I love my self and I love my life
I love this world and all it’s grime
I’m not afraid of when I’ll die
Light it up
Let’s get high
And I know and I know it’s such a shame
And I know and I know it’s all a game
And I’ll play you like you’ve never been played
And I saved you when you were dead
So get your twisted thoughts out of my head cause I won’t be held accountable
I won’t be held accountable
I know a thing or two about love
Ive Been down in the dumps for long enough
I’m not afraid of anything
Light it up let’s do it again
And I know and I know it’s such a shame
And I know and I know it’s all a game
And I’ll play you like you’ve never been played
And I saved you when you were dead so get your twisted thoughts out of my head
Cause I won’t be held accountable
I won’t be held accountable
I love my self and I love my life
I love this world and all it’s grime
I’m not afraid of when I’ll die
Light it up
Let’s get high
And I know and I know it’s such a shame
And I know and I know it’s all a game
And I’ll play you like you’ve never been played
And I saved you when you were dead
So get your twisted thoughts out of my head cause I won’t be held accountable
I won’t be held accountable

she paints here face like the Sistine Chapel
and she makes mistakes
yeah we make mistakes
little rascals
little rascals
she is sober
she is sober now
we wish we were well
oh how
we wish
we were well.
she can paint inside the lines
and we run and play
yeah we run away

little lions
some times love isn’t worth the hate
yeah sometimes love
sometimes love isn’t worth the pain
a little indifference to pave the way

It is 1:45 am. We are some where west of Saskatoon Saskatchewan heading towards Calgary Alberta. I am sitting at the front of the bus staring into an empty feeling.
A giant shadow if you will.
I count every line in the center of the road before it disappears in our past,
For no reason.
No reason other then to count the lines in the center of the road.
There are more signs warning us of potential moose (that we may or may not hit and or see) on then road then there are other vehicles.
Every 6 to 8 minutes a not so pointed pyramid built of little orange lights comes barreling towards us at 120 km hours.
I will raise my eyes to watch it pass, inevitably loosing count of the lines in the center of the road, resulting in starting over again but this is easier then counting stars.
My soundtrack tonight is an album titled ‘ A Winter Tale’ (if you don’t know, investigate). I first got to hear some of said album last year and have been curious since. Given my current situation and setting this album is almost perfect. It’s as if it was written with the intentions of being listened to driving across America at the end of August (not Canada in the middle of the winter, but given the shadow I face right now, one would not know the difference until they stepped outside).
With the one you love.
The one you confide in.
Your best friend.
Its a musical journey of emotions placed perfectly in an order that tells me that Bobby Long knows (and maybe he does) exactly what he wants the listener to feel when he wants them to feel it.
it is pop
It is folk
it is raw
it is real
It is loud
It is big
It is inspiring
It is happy
It is sad
It is intelligent
and it almost makes a.m radio cool again.

(if it ever wasn’t that is)

tour update in a nutshell

Back to our daily dose of Vitamin Diesel..
Regina Bound..
And we have a semi working bus again. I pray to someone else’s higher being we make it to Calgary. We had 3 break downs in 3 days.
Had to abandon the bus in Dryden Ontario (middle of fucking nowhere…seriously)
Rented a car.
Rented a uhaul moving truck
And made the Winnipeg show.
Got to see an old (not in age) friend while here.
I get to see my parents this weekend.
And there is a small rumor of a rumor in which I cannot talk about just yet but it is sweet.

The Envy are #1 on Much More Music’s top 20 countdown and the video has only been out for two weeks. Help support by calling your local Rock radio station and requesting “Don’t Let Go”l by The Envy.. Let’s bring these guys back to the US and all over the world.

this is no ordinary love

So here I am.
It is twenty five to three in the morning.
I am laying in a king sized bed (sadly it is being shared) in a 3 star hotel on the outskirts of down town Austin.
And I am in love.
With no one.
With nothing in particular.
But this world.
We have been in Texas since Sunday and I don’t care to leave (however it will happen sooner than later, and that’s ok cause I know I will be back)
I love the south.
I love texas.
and I already love this tour.
We are only two shows in and its as close to perfect as it can be.
My back ground in this industry is of the modern rock sorts.
And this (clearly) is far from that.
There is no rush
There is no stress
And there is no ego
This is real
This is life
This is music
Its raw
And it has meaning.
I don’t believe I have found it yet, and I may not find it any time soon.
But it is there, and that is good enough for me.
Brooke Fraser has got an amazing team of people with her.
She is great to watch.
She is funny.
She is real.
Her people are real.
I feel like I have know them forever, when realistically we all only met less then 36 hours ago.
Today, I consider myself one of the luckiest guys on the face of the planet.
I am traveling.
I am traveling with my best friend.
And together, we are doing what we love to do.
6 years ago when we first met, we talked about this.
We shared this dream.
We shared a passion.
And here we are.
In Texas.
In Austin, the self proclaimed music capital of the world.
For one reason and one reason only.
Love
I’ve got nothing more then a sports bag stuffed full of clothes.
I’ve got my favourite tee-shirts.
I’ve got my favourite shoes.
I’ve got thousands of miles of open road to drive in the next month.
And I couldn’t be happier.
I don’t live a materialistic life out here, not that I do when I am home, but it is easy to fall into that trap.
I have no one to answer to,
And I feel great.
I’ve met some amazing fans.
I’ve met amazing people, some whom I’ve talked to in the past and some whom I hope to speak with more often.
When I left Vancouver on Sunday, I was, in a round about way, a complete mess.
My anxiety was sky high
My stress levels were astronomical
And I left with a lot to do when I come home.
Causing more stress..
I feel as though its just gone.
I know I will be ok
And I don’t worry about the things I’ve got no control over

Because everything will be ok..

“…higher.than.me…”

like the drugs that we took
the night we met
you make my heart race
like the streets that you’re walkin’
and the talk that you’re talkin’
your secrets are safe
there’s a bird at the window
don’t let him know what we know cause birds make mistakes
she’ll give a little love for a dime of ‘dro yeah she’ll give a little more go get it go
its a good thing that I don’t believe in a god much higher than me
Its a good thing that I don’t believe in a god much higher than me
the lights are out on hastings street
damn that devil he’s looking for me
like the tricks that you’re turning and the bridges you’re burning
your lies are truths
pretty girls in pretty dresses all dolled up with wrong intentions

my first love broke my heart for the first time and i was like…

10 reasons why I think I am a better role model then Justin Beiber (and I still don’t have a book or magazine made after me)

1. I’m 24 and still alive (that’s an accomplishment on its own)
2. I don’t punch people (especially 12 year olds) in the face (if called a faggot)
3. I have lived enough life to write 10 books, and yet I don’t have a memoir- how you live 13 years then get famous and have enough to write memoirs with I don’t know (oh wait, for enough money you will let anything happen).
4. I don’t want to date Kim Kardashian
5. I don’t have to announce on national TV that I need a “wing man” to meet girls- infact I can meet a girls on my own
6. When I was his age I worked a normal job making 6 dollars an hour
7. When I write about love, its from first hand experience.
8. I had a lame “emo” haircut when having a lame “emo” haircut was un-cool.
9. I can drive a car on my own.
10. I am willing to bet an indefinite amount of money that Justin Beiber will have a mug shot before I ever do.. (Unless my current passport photo counts)

K, so the kid has mad millions of dollars (most of it he probably can’t touch until he is 18), he has sold millions of albums, he is known and adored by millions of girls world wide(fuck he even plays the drums better then I do) but coooome on people, when will this burn out.
I cannot take this hype seriously, this is why I don’t 1) have to buy into it 2) feel I need to buy into it 3) want to buy into it..

If the Beibs is still at it in 10 years maybe then I will be inclined to buy his memoirs and cd’s. Maybe then he will have a clue what this world is like. And the music industry.. Oh boy, he really has no clue..
I was with a band on Island DefJam records who more or less dropped so that the money could be put up for JB… Realistically a good call on a business stand point, but what about the fuckin music.

can i get a ride home… on your face?…

Well, I can’t say that I am overly surprised by the results of the 2010 VMA’s(as I could have told you the winner for every category if presented a list) but I can say I am very impressed.
To me they did nothing but prove that people in “suits” (or costumes when it comes to Lady Gaga) really do run this industry..
And that is all it is…
An industry…
The business of music is so easily predictable (see the results of the VMA’s).
But as an industry, as a service being provided (for free realistically, thank god people pay for over priced bull shit advertising space on tv during such events) they really did a knock up job this year.
Chelsea Handler (whom I share a birthday with as well as the apparent same amount of dislike for lady gaga) was probably the best host they have had in years. There wasn’t one joke she told that didn’t have me in stitches. Her entrance and opening was great, not even Lady Gaga could make fun of herself in the way that Handler did, yet she kept it classy..
Aside from the obvious lip syncing ( or lack there of in the case of Kanye West, who likely should have chosen that path) that one comes to expect these days, everyone’s performance was entertaining and well rehearsed. Even Justin Bieber owned that stage with his drum solo (he even managed to keep it pro when he dropped a stick).
The advertising dollars mtv made did a great job with the stage show. The stage wasn’t too over done and the producers used a lot of great effects.

What really gets me though is the lack of antics. I look forward to the shit that happens at the VMA’s. Taylor Swift and Kanye. Eminem and Triumph the Insult Dog, Eminem and Moby. What about the fist fight between Brett Michaels and CC DeVille of Poison ? Or the time Vince Neil of Motley Crue had his way with Izzy Stradlin of G ‘n’ R. Or the time Axl Rose wanted to fight Kurt Cobain and then Nirvana played “Rape Me” when they were told to play “Smells Like Teen Spirit”…
the list goes on..
Where the fuck were the antics?Even Chelsea Handler tried to encourage that shit (likely because she was told to as they were trying to prevent it).
There was no one trying to make a politcal statement, no fights, no courtney love, for fuck sakes even Lindsey Lohan showed face and kept her cool, when does that happen? Fuck she even made fun of herself…
The “craziest” thing I saw (also the lamest) was Lady ” I can fake anything” Gaga ask Cher “to hold her meat purse” like wwwwwhat the fuck!
And where was the rock and roll? Why does seem as though its being forgotten?
Sure, there was Linkin Park at Griffith Observatory, but Paramore hardly had a chance. Where was Weezer or (dare I say it) Nickelback?where is The Arcade Fire?
What happened to the times when Nine Inch Nails got some air time?
Remember Alanis Morrisette and Oasis?
All reasons why the business of music is people in suits behind desks (I suppose its ok but why must the other side to Top 40 be forgotten?)
Chad Kroeger isn’t adored like Justin Bieber, but I guarantee he has made more money and his career will go further.
Ok so, “Airplanes” has made more money than any Paramore single, but why couldn’t Paramore play a full song, a single, something to remind people who the are and that they are still around and “owning” stages across the world . They had a song on the Twilight soundtrack (sure that’s old new now but I stand behind my point) and they still get shafted? Why? I don’t get…
All in all, I was entertained, millions of others were as well and twitter had non-stop problems with their servers being busy, so clearly it was a smash…

*note this was written a long time ago and i am now just publishing it*

A few weeks ago I had a conversation with a good friend of mine. She is opinionated much like myself but we seem to agree on a lot of things, most things infact, (most of the time..) until we discussed the importance of Adam Lambert and Lady Gaga… the conversation came when I sent her a message saying “Adam Lambert may be a genious” in which she replied asking why. I stated my reason(s) which was basically he is an amazing song writer.. and at the time i thought so.. i was listening to “whadya want from me” as it is on the radio twice an hour.
I had really convinced myself that Adam Lambert may just be a genious..
I had no idea why either, aside from that song, I had only ever heard “For your Entertainment” a few times and I knew what I knew from when he did American Idol.
While she disagree’d with me she brought up that Lady Gaga was infact the pop genious and Adam Lambert was a mere nothing.. (not quite phrased like that mind you). She carried on saying that “Gaga” has changed music for our generation (lets just go with genre specific on this one) and she was all around great. To that, I immediatley rejected any sort of common feelings. Up until then Lady Gaga really irritated me and I never cared about anything she ever did or said..
I still dont.
It is likely I never will either.
Since our conversation, this very topic has been a common conversation for me to have within my circle(s) of friends. From some what of an insiders point of view, I had expected that people might agree with me, and really it was not this way at all. I am not saying my friends and peers think that “Gaga” is amazing and will do wonders to the music industry, they either a) dont care and tell me to stop talking b) agree with eachother that Lady Gaga is decent and provides great club songs or c) love LG and dont care at all about AL…

so I got curious..
… and I did some research..
I aquired a copy of both artists latest efforts and really listened to them… well I at least tried. it was actually painful.. but I did it.

With a bunch of prefabricated thoughts going into this, this is what I have conclded…

Lady Gaga is a slut. This is undeniable and evident in every song she sings, even she cannot deny it.
Adam Lambert is confused. This can also not be denied. I would not be surprised if he came out one day and said he was bi-sexual and not gay. Both albums are honest, a little too honest maybe but at least they can both tell the truth about who they really are, and still make you wanna shake yo’ ass.
Based on reviews, conversations and the little knowledge( the radio singles I have heard and the odd youtube video I have watched) I have, I expected Lady Gaga’s “The Fame Monster” to be shocking in the way my mother was shocked the first time we saw and heard Eminem on tv. I was expecting a lot more in that regards, in all honesty I was let down. The only thing that really took me by surprise was that fact that Lady Gaga openly admits that she “likes IT rough” and she is only in it “for the fame” or whatever she babbles and repeats during the entire album. (She does so in different ways a few times)
I didnt expect much from Adam Lambert, I had just hoped for a lot more. What I did expect was a lot more rock and a lot less of the album being all over the place. Every single song sounds different from the last. One song sounds like Prince, one song sounds like Michael Bolton, through in some show tunes with a dash of The Fray or any other band that sounds like them (which there is plenty of) mix it all up with some ridiculous synth sounds and a very obvious hint of David Bowie(down to the front cover) and you have Adam Lambert’s debut album.
Now, the thing that really gets me about LG is that she is exactley the same as AL. She isnt new (current yes), she really isnt THAT creative and I am still not convinced she is that talented or influential in any way shape or form. If I had a daughter who was at the age where she was discovering music, I would be putting a kybosh on Lady Gaga. The only thing she has the ability to teach girls is how to lie, cheat and steal for personal gain, and what the fuck is that ever going to do for 99.5% of anyone in this world. At least Eminem taught me what happens when you take to many drugs and do fucked up shit, I am just a naive little prick and had to try a few things out for myself. I cannot say I honestly know anyone who would do as Gaga does (however there a few people in my life, past and present who now make a little more sense to me) likely for the obvious reasons, but I think a lot of people (girls more specifically) would give anything to be her. Why, I have not got the slightest clue.
As i write this, I am listening again to “For Your Entertainment” and in some round about ways Adam Lambert is also a slut, he just seems to have a more sophisticated way of saying it. Again, I find nothing about him to be influential and I cannot see myself taking anything from this. There is soul, but it is a sound not an emotion, and that could make a world of difference for him, where as Lady Gaga may just be the polar opposite of that, she may have the soul as an emotion(it is actually kind of souless when you think about, regardless it is her soul I suppose) and not as a sound, and that may work to her benefit.

As i mentioned before, either artist is anything new. Lady Gaga is nothing more than the glamour of Madonna, the style of Bjork and trying to go for the shock value of Marilyn Manson… let me explain..
Her songs, if you know anything about Madge are the same songs written differently. Her name, “Lady Gaga” sounds like a two year old singing “Lady Madonna” by The Beatles… think about it..
Her “bizzare” style, is everything Bjork had done before, perhaps a little better, and the whole controversy about her being a man or whatever it was.. Manson did the same shit(more so the “Mechanical Animal” era… )there was even rumors saying he had some of his ribs removed and inserted into his penis in order to suck his own dick… like wtf.. who believes that shit? at the time, everyone no likely no one, but he will forever be remembered for that

What will the youth of today remember forever about Lady Gaga and Adam Lambert?
What will those same youth say in 20 years when they hear those songs again?
is anything Lambert or Gaga done to date timeless? no! Significant? not really! important? apparently and I still don’t get how or why.
I understand the songs are catchy and in the grand scheme of the music industry and the stagnant air that has loomed above it for years, they have both done something differently… they perfected ripping people off… and getting away with it.. They have created an indentity that is completely their own… to a new world..

so, Gaga or Lambert?
and i say neither.
I say this because they are both still complete rubbish. However, if they had a kid, in 20 years, that kid may just be the biggest and most respected artist of all time…
To bad ALam doesnt like the women bits.. we may never know what could have been

…in every parting there is an image of death…

I met a guy the other day, this guy goes by the name of Brian…
Brian and I (briefly) went to the same high school in my junior years…
But we never knew eachother.
Brian has a twin brother…
I knew him…
Sort of.
I don’t remember his name now, but we used to spend time in “detention” together… If it could be called such a thing.
Infact, now that I think about it, I think the teacher was just lonely and had no one to go home as he always kept the same kids after school..
Maybe we were that mans only friends that year…
Brians brother was a good guy, he would smoke weed with me, he would drive me home when it rained and he would often say hi to me in the hall way.
But this isn’t about Brians brother…
Its about Brian..
There are two things about Brian that anyone who knows him, knows…
He loves rock and roll music,
and
He is blind…
He lives a normal life.
He works a normal job.
And he doesn’t complain.
In a way, he seems to embrace it.
Now, what really gets me about Brian, is his love for rock and roll…
This man can tell you anything and everything about rock and roll.
If you name him an Areosmith album he could tell you everything about that album.
The studio it was recorded at.
The name of the producer.
Hell he could probably tell you who Steven Tyler thanks in the liner notes.
And this goes for any rock band.
Nirvana.
Green Day.
Kiss.
The Scorpians.
You get it.
You can ask him about what bands won a Grammy and it what year and he could probably tell you…
He can likely tell you who married who.
Who cheated on who with who.
You get it.
Now, the one thing Brian doesn’t know about rock and roll, is the way people look.
He has never seen the image of rock and roll..
And this is amazing…
This is amazing because image is everything in rock and roll…
At least it was.
the hair.
the clothes.
the sunglasses (think bono beck and elton john).
the boots.
the cons.
the leotards and spandex.
the neon?.

Chances are, he could tell me more about kiss then I will ever know, yet he doesn’t know what they look like…
It is kiss for fuck sakes…
Its all about the look…
Motley Crue…
Same thing…
Slash.
Fuck me it goes on and on…
I imagine he has been told what they looked like, he could probably tell you Paul Stanley has a star over his right eye.
I assume he knows what the shape of a star feels like…
But to never see it almost feels like it takes away from what they represent.. It would be like watching a movie and not being able to hear anything.
What would “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” be without dialogue?
He isn’t alone.
And I don’t think he cares.
It is something he has never known…
This now happened a couple of weeks ago, and I haven’t stopped thinking about it…
I can’t seem to figure out if it means…
Do we see music in two different ways?
I’m sure we can agree on timeless songs but am I to quick to judge based on looks?
Would Brian like Twisted Sister if he knew what Dee Snider looked like on stage?
Does Bon Jovi’s hair or Mike Reno’s tight red leather pants mean anything?
I like to think it does.
I think image (or the lack there of) is the reason why music sucks today…
Justin Bieber…and his hair…
Lady Gaga… and well,her…
Nelly… and his band aid…
There is nothing believable in those people.
At least, I cannot believe them…
I find it easier to believe that John Lennon really was a working class hero…
I feel truth and sorrow in the flannel shirts and ripped jeans that signifies the spawn of the North West.
Grunge.
I wonder what Brian thinks…
Maybe he thinks “The Fame Monster” is a masterpiece and “Bad Motor Finger” is crap and will never be remembered..
That would be an impossible thought though..
At least it should be…
Maybe Brian doesn’t give two fucks…
Maybe he would agree…
From all that I know (which isn’t a lot) I think we would share the same thoughts…
I imagine we could agree that “Free Bird” could easily be in the top ten greatest songs ever written (if such a list could actually be composed).
Hell, I think he may even agree that Nickelback (as much as I wish this weren’t true) may be really the only timeless band of the last ten years(the foo fighters also fit into this list but they started in the 90′s)…
I think that says a lot coming from me.
I can appreciate what they have done, and I can enjoy the music when I hear it but they aren’t my thing, its not music I crave,it is nothing I personally would spend the money on, their live show hasn’t changed except the pyro has gotten bigger and merch has gone up in price.
But that’s why they sell albums…
That’s why they can go anywhere in the world and sell out arenas…
Their fans know what to expect in the same way promoters expect Axl Rose to not show up, or how fans expected Kurt Cobain to smash his guitar…
These people have the same things in common…
Nothing changes…
And it works for them…
It works for the world…
But what happened to that?
What happened to rock and roll?
Was it the “nu metal” explosion of bands like Limp Bizkit, Slipknot, Coal Chamber etc?
Was it the wave of “pop” music of the mid 90′s?
Maybe it was the slew of singer songwriters like Jack Johnson and Ben Harper.
Or maybe its just me…
Maybe I am to critical…

If Brian could see would he hear differently?
I wonder…
